Top Tips : 7 Things to know about Turkey

Hello, You’ve heard about the endless glasses of tea, the kebabs and how to haggle in the bazaar. But here are seven less commonly known things about life and culture in Turkey.

1) Before you visit
First of all, before anything else… check your passport to insure that it is valid for at least 3 months from date of arrival into the country. Your stay in Turkey as a tourist is limited up to 90 days.
You will need to pay an exact amount of 10 GBP for an entry visa. This can be paid at the aiport on arrival. see also Flights

2) Money – Turkish Lira
Turkish Lira is available in the following denominations:
Banknotes: 5, 10, 20, 50 & 100 TL
Coins: 1, 5, 10, 25 & 50 Kurus and 1 TL
(average exchange rate 2.5)

3) Turkish people are extremely hospitable
If a Turkish person invites you to their house after you’ve known them for half an hour, don’t panic. Turks are incredibly friendly and hospitable and many will consider it an honor if you accept an invitation to visit them. Once inside, you will be plied with food and Turkish çay (TEA) OR strong black coffee. see also Hotels

4) Turkish people are also very inquisitive
A typical conversation with a Turkish person you’ve just met might go something like this: “What country are you from?… Are you married?… Is your husband / wife Turkish?… Do you have children?… How old are you?”

If you come from a different culture these might seem like very personal questions. Compared to people in U.K., the Turkish people I know are much more comfortable talking freely about personal details, even with someone they don’t know well.

5) Leave your Mobile Phone at home!
The cheapest way to make domestic calls is from a public phone using a phone card bought at the post office (PTT). If the PTT is closed, you can usually find local entrepreneurs selling cards at a slight mark up near the public phones.
To make a long distance international call you will need at least one 100 unit phone card.

6) There aren’t any camels
In Turkish holiday resorts it’s not unusual to see a couple of camels lined up strategically outside the tourist attractions, waiting to be photographed. Like apple tea, someone discovered that tourists like them. Turkey doesn’t have a desert, and it doesn’t have any (native) camels either.

7) Don’t mention Midnight Express
Turkish people are sometimes asked about the questions and stereotypes they encounter most when they travel outside Turkey, and this is possibly the one that makes them cringe the most. The screenwriter of Midnight Express has apologized for the film’s negative portrayal of the Turkish people, but Turks feel they have to explain to the world that you shouldn’t believe everything you see at the movies.

Ephesus – sightseeing in Turkey

Hi there, Kusadasi, is a resort town reasonably close to the ancient site of Ephesus which should be on your “what to do” list for Turkey.

The city, founded around 3,000 BC originally was a centre of worship for the Anatolian Goddess Diana and was an important Port in the ancient world. You can see the temple of Hadrian, Marble Way (where the rich lived) and the amazing library of Celsus which has niches for storing the papyrus scrolls. The real highlight of the site was the great theatre built very early AD under emperor Claudius. The theatre seated 25,000 spectators and was first used for all types of productions/theatre including gladiator fights. It is largely intact as it was.

Of special interest is that St Paul came here and delivered his message to the Ephesians in the period when Christianity was banned and he had to be secreted away after his sermon.

Another site that should not be missed is the house where Mary, Mother of Jesus lived out her last days. The bible backs up the fact that Mary moved to Ephesus (as does the Koran) with the Disciple John who set up the underground Christian Church. Later when Chrisianity became accepted a Basilica was built over St John’s tomb at Ephesus. more

Ephesus is a ‘must see’ tourist attraction. You will not be disappointed.

There are many cheap holidays to Kusadasi & cheap flights to Turkey. And there is much to see and do in this beautiful town.

Everyone loves the look of beautiful tanned skin. It looks healthy and attractive. Getting a beautiful suntan is something that must be done carefully so that you do not permanently damage your skin. The sun can be very strong in Turkey with summer temperatures reaching 30-40 degrees.

So in order to be able to enjoy the sun when on holiday follow these practical guidelines to safe sunbathing:-

1, Avoid exposure during the midday hours and don’t stay in it for too long if it is very fierce.

2, Choose a sun cream with added vitamins and minerals, apply it 30-60 minutes before exposure and re-apply often. Added nutrients which have been found to be of particular benefit are vitamins C and E along with the minerals selenium and zinc.

3, Take supplements such as vitamins C,D,E and Beta-carotene and the minerals selenium, calcium and zinc. These will give your sunscreen a boost and help to prevent skin damage.

4, Eat a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruit and veg. They are rich in vitamins, minerals, flavenoids and carotenoids, all of which are essential for a healthy skin and are good healing agents too.

5, Drink green tea, this has recently been found to be of benefit to prevent burning if drunk whilst sunbathing, it can also be soothing if applied topically to sunburn.

If after all your efforts at safe sunbathing you still end up sun burnt here are a few natural remedies that may help:-

ATOL – Book with Confidence

Did you know that 9 ATOL companies and 8 ABTA companies have collapsed this year potentially leaving holidaymakers stranded abroad.

To safeguard your travel plans and cash is to ensure your travel arrangements are protected by ATOL or the TTA, preferably both. ATOL and the TTA are entities that HolidayMate.com & many other big companies are accredited by, so their customers are protected if the worst happens to the suppliers of your arrangements.

When booking your travel arrangements through HolidayMate.com we become your travel agent. What this means is that your contract will be with the Flight supplier or Accommodation supplier. Should your Flight company collapse, ATOL or the TTA’s Safi insurance (Scheduled Airline Failure insurance) will step in to make sure you’re not stranded abroad. Should your Accommodation supplier collapse HolidayMate.com will hold your payment in a trust account. Once you return from holiday your funds are released and that is just the reassurance HolidayMate.com, as your travel agent want to give you. Always remember, if you go down the DIY route and piece together your own break, your money is likely, not protected.

Don’t just keep your fingers crossed. Stick to these guidelines and safeguard your time away.

• Only book your travel arrangements through travel agents that hold an ATOL or TTA accreditation . We at HolidayMate.com protect you with both ATOL and TTA• If you don’t book all your travel arrangements through HolidayMate.com , some travel arrangements might not be protected – accommodation, transfers and so on. Always Check!

• If you’re doing flight-only with another company, always book with a credit card. If your airline goes bust your credit card company will give you a refund on all flights over £100.
