Gold in Turkey

Gold in Turkey has an important place in society. Often used as a form of investment, gold is seen as better than money in the bank especially amongst the more traditional Muslims for whom earning interest on money goes against their beliefs. Money should be freely in circulation not sitting in the bank earning interest for doing nothing – or so they feel. By buying gold to sell later they are still investing but in a more acceptable way. Gold rarely drops in value & you can enjoy wearing it too .

At weddings & on the birth of children gold is give as gifts. The purpose of this at a wedding is several fold. If the couple need financial assistance they can sell the gold, if the wife becomes widowed or is abandoned she can use the gold to live off until she can improve her circumstances.

Gold in Turkey is either 14 or 22 carat gold – you generally won’t find 9 carat here, to them its not “real” gold & should be consigned to christmas crackers. 22 carat gold is easy to spot its colour is far more buttery than other carats & it is much softer & obviously more expensive. The majority of gold in tourist resorts is 14 carat.

Gold in Turkey should always bear a hallmark – 585 denotes 14 carat ( ie 58.5% gold content ) whilst 22 carat should have 916 stamped on it – but these may not be officially recognised in other countries. Buying gold for pleasure rather than to sell back in UK is far better . You should be given a guarantee by the jewellers, especially if there are any precious stones involved & this will help you insure the item for the correct value when you get home. If you are looking to buy gold on holiday to Turkey always go to a reputable jeweller – ask around for recommendations & anywhere the locals shop is usually trustworthy. Price of a piece will be determined by weight of the gold, craftmanship & any stones used. The basic price  for 14 carat is currently around £20 a gram.

The great thing about jewellers in Turkey is that they can make any design you like so if you want a “copy” of an item you like or wish to have a unique design made, they can do this for you & can usually get the item ready within a few days. This is perfect if you are celebrating a special occasion ( wedding, anniversary, landmark birthday ) as you get can something that no one else will have & at a good price too. Always haggle ( it’s worth a try )  & do not feel pressured into buying – there are plenty of great jewellers in every resort & town so take your time & have a good look around.

Satisfying a sweet tooth on a holiday in Turkey

Carrying on from the previous blog about sweets in Turkey there are 2 other desserts that you may well come across on your Turkey holiday.

The first one is baklava . This sweet has a long history & though has been claimed by many nations it has its roots in Central Asia Turkey. The filo pastry type used today was developed in the kitchens of Topkapi Palace during the Ottoman Empire when the sultan would serve it to new soldier recruits at a certain time during Ramadan in a ceremonial procession.

The word Baklava borrowed from the Ottoman word first appears in English circa 1653 & is used throughout many other languages with some minor variations in spelling etc

Baklava is made from many layers of filo pastry filled with a variety of finely chopped nuts & steeped in sugar syrup or honey. It is made in large trays & then cut into squares or
diamonds. Other variations include rolled types. Different regions of Turkey have their own baklava specialities eg Gaziantep has pistachio baklava which has since been patented to the region.

When you are on holiday in Turkey do try some baklava its is very sweet so you only need a few squares to satisfy a sweet tooth craving but avoid at all costs if you have any nut allergies or if you are weight watching.

Traditional Turkish dessert

Another slightly odder sweet is pismaniye (pronounced pishmarniyay). This is a pulled sugar & flour soaked in butter mix that has a texture similar to candy floss though less sticky but more closely resembles the fibre glass insulation in your loft though luckily it tastes much better. Flour that has been roasted in butter is kneaded into boiled sugar. After a long time kneading strands form which are allowed to rest. The final product is
often sprinkled with nuts such as pistachios.

Pismaniye is first mentioned in Turkish writings around 1430’s but is thought to have originated in Persia where it was known as pesmek. The Turkish city of Izmit near Istanbul is especially famous for its pismaniye which has a higher sugar content than other regions. Other areas call it by different names – strecth helva, strand helva & even palace helva in deference to that produced by the kitchens of the Ottoman palaces. In fact making this sweet was a traditional forfeit on lost bets during the 19th century with the losers preparing a large batch for the sultan to enjoy.

If you see some pismaniye definitely try it – it can have a rather disconcerting crackle when placed on the tongue but it is delicious & makes a great small gift to take home.

Holidays to Turkey – The mystery of the night flight concluded

Recap : After arriving at their hotel on Saturday  2nd June at 4am, Mr & Mrs Jones are required to check out on Friday 15th June as their 14 night holiday in Turkey comes to an end ( if you have just joined us in this saga please look at the 2 previous blogs to catch up ) but they dont fly until 3am on Saturday 16th June

So you have to check out at midday but your airport transfer isn’t going to pick you up until midnight ? What can you do ?

Luckily hotels are aware of this timing predicament & most will allow a later check out for
a small extra charge. Some may allow you to keep your room within this charge however this is not always possible especially during peak holiday times. Where hotels offer all inclusive you will be charged if you want to continue using the facility after your check out time has passed.

Many hotels in Turkey have places that luggage can be stored until your transfer
arrives & may also have showering facilities if you are unable to keep your room on longer. Bed & breakfast hotels where you pay for drinks & food as you go are quite happy for
you to spend the day around the pool but in a half board hotel the evening meal would  be payable extra . Unfortunately it can sometimes work out that you only actually get 13 meals rather than 14 on a half board basis holiday .

So is there a solution ? To most people a last mooch about resort getting rid of all the
Turkish spare change they have accumulated , having a last meal out & farewell drink at a bar isn’t a great inconvenience .They are quite happy to snooze on the plane.

But for those who prefer not to be roomless for those hours the answer is actually rather logical – book a 15 night stay at the hotel . Simple & in a lot of cases cheaper than paying the extra charges in resort.

If you have already booked your holiday to Turkey & are unsure whether this scenario applies to you, check your Holiday Mate invoice. As in this example below the paperwork would clearly show a difference between the accommodation dates & the flight dates ( see in red ) Even though they both say 14 nights this refers to the check in / out dates not the flight ones .

Religious Festivals In Turkey

There are a lots of religious festivals in Turkey. However, these festivals are usually not on the same date as they are calculated because of the lunar calendar. The “Feast of the Sacrifice” and “Ramadan” festival are celebrated ten days earlier every year. Sometimes there is a religious festival celebrated for every season of the year and because of this people make good use of the flights to Turkey in order to take part in these religious celebrations.
“Ramadan” is a religious festival celebrated within the first three days of the month that is known as “Sevval”. And the “Feast of Sacrifice” is celebrated by everyone within the four days that follow the tenth day of the month that is known as “Zilhicce” These religious festivals are very popular traditions.

The purpose behind the festivals are that, neighbours, relatives & friends visit each other and catch up. Young people are known to kiss the hand of their parents to receive best wishes & blessings from them. As a Tradition, during the festivals people give presents & gifts to children that kiss peoples hands. During the Ramadan festival, guests are traditionally given sweets and this is why the “Ramadan festival” is known as the “Sugar Festival”

The “Feast of Sacrifice” – during this festival people are given meat that has come from an animal that has been sacrificed.
