Holidays in Turkey – It’s still all about the money

So you have chosen your holiday to Turkey, the flight to Dalaman is booked & you are off to the bank to get your currency . Our advice ? Dont. That is, dont bother exchanging hundreds of pounds into lira or even to Euros. Having been a popular holiday destination for the British public for many years ( & also used to having a rather unpredictable national currency ) resorts such as Fethiye, Kalkan & Marmaris are familiar with & very welcoming of sterling. Most resort restaurants, hotels & even taxi drivers here are quite happy to accept Sterling notes ( though not Scottish notes or sterling coins ) & will return change as local currency .

In resort rates of exchange are also far more favourable than those in UK but can fluctuate daily so changing little & often is the key. A word of warning though. Think twice about exchanging money in shops as usually the higher rate they display is for purchase only transactions . Every resort will have change offices, post offices , banks etc who will have
the rate clearly displayed & more times than not no commission is payable ( ask first ! ) so stick to these where possible especially when converting travellers cheques.

The bottom line ? Bring just enough Turkish Lira to tide you over for the first few hours until you can get out to explore your resort . Who to ask about the best & safest places locally to change money ? Why your  Holiday Mate representative of course ! They will be there throughout your holiday in Turkey to assist you any time you need it so make the most of them .

MT.NEMRUT – Sightseeing in Turkey

Nemrut or Nemrud (Turkish – Nemrut Dağı) is a 2,134 m (7,001 ft) high mountain in the southeastern area of Turkey. It is known for the vast statues of the 1st century BC tomb on its summit.

The mountain is located 40 km (25 miles) north of Kahta, near “Adıyaman” provience. In 62 BC, King “Antiochus I Theos” of Commagene built huge statues (8–9 m/26–30 ft high) of himself, two lions, two eagles and various Greek, Armenian and Persian gods, on the mountain top. The gods he built where, Hercules-Vahagn, Zeus-Aramazd, Tyche, and Apollo-Mithras. These statues had each god inscribed on them. Now days, the heads of the statues are now scattered throughout the site. And the pattern of damage to the heads, mainly to the noises, suggests that they were deliberately damaged. This is due to a belief in ‘iconoclasm’.
The site also preserves huge stone slabs with ‘bas-relief figures’ that where thought to have formed a large frieze. These slabs show the ancestors of ‘Antiochus’ which included both ‘Macedonians’ and ‘Persians’.

The ‘Tumulus’ at the site, which is 49 m (161 ft) tall and 152 m (499 ft) in diameter, the same statues and ancestors found throughout the site can also be found here.
The statues have Greek facial features and Persian clothing and hairstyling. The western terrace contains a very large slab with a lion. The lion is showing the arrangement of the stars and planets, Jupiter, Mercury and Mars. On the 7 July 62 BC, the estimated time when construction began on these monuments. The eastern portion is very well preserved having been composed of several layers of rock. There is evidence of a walled passageway linking the eastern and western terraces. These where from a path below at the foot of Mount Nemrut, and the possible uses for this site might have included:- Religious ceremonies and festivals, because of the astronomical and religious nature of the monument.

The term “hierothesion” is known by the arrangement of these statues.

The wonderful city of Istanbul is not just mosques and museums. Although it has many historic attractions, modern Istanbul is nearly as famous for its nightlife as it is for its history & culture. Turn your gaze up to the sky, and you will realize that the city’s rooftop bars are the key.

Find Hotels

There are a number of expensive superclubs along the Bosphorus, and an equally glamourous but more comfortable alternative along the rooftops. Istanbul’s sensational skyline and picturesque waterways provide the perfect atmosphere to enjoy a moderately priced drink among the stars. Many of the rooftop bars offer live music, and dancing is common after midnight.
